Regardless of the east and the west, folds found in the human body dealt with in art history tended to be characterized by such negativities as aging, disease, pain and death. The folds found in the human body sometimes unveil the trace of pain of a long life or the depth of wisdom carved by a vast amount of experiences, but more than anything else, they were mostly used as main themes of stories that a society supposed to be young and healthy needs to pursue. The fold of the nature was no exception. Art works that express seriously curved mountain ridges, shorelines and entangled plants easily induce appreciators to have a surreal and grotesque feeling instead of pleasantness and security given by ‘the natural nature.’ Since these art works provide the possibility of perceiving the nature unclearly, accidently and irrationally, they fundamentally prevent appreciators from having the hope of controlling the nature. What classical arts that put ‘mimesis of an ideal’ before anything else wanted to achieve was not unclear profoundness but clear depth of the truth. However, the Baroque was different. It negated not only the aspect of reproduction but also the prototype of classicalism in the attitude of gazing at the world. Complex folds came forward in the Baroque, and the themes of art works were dependent on curves of surface and potential of darkness instead of being clarified based on lines gathered together. Gilles Deleuze is focused on the unclear and convergent aspects of the Baroque. He is certain that the folds of the Baroque expand human beings’s competence for thinking toward the world and that they are a space of creation of virtual life. The folds that ceaselessly repeat folding and unfolding within shapes, colors and spaces continuously revolve around our judgment on the human body, the souls and the world as the Baroque in the 17th century suggested the possibility of consecutive and limitless creation to the reality facing human beings. After all, folds intentionally emphasized in the contemporary arts are the results of a highly ideologized world view and strong affirmations on unlimited changes in the world that creates phenomenal ‘differences.’
