The major tasks of this paper are a spatial delineation at the small scale level of the industrial regions; identification of its regional characteristics; and the introduction of modern map construction methods.
The combined methods of 'natural break' classes obtained from histogram plots of the data and of statistical surface by the isopleth line have brought about adequate results to identify the typical industrial regions in South Korea. There are seven recognized major industrial regions which have nodal characteristics and hierarchical spatial structure around the cities. The criterion for delineating a functional region is the industrial gross output per statistical area unit. Variable industrial gross output represents a better qualified indicator for an industrial region than the total number of manufacturing employment and establishments in South Korea. This is the results of rapid growth occasioned by the introduction of petrochemical, electronic and equipment industries and their concomitant level of technology and automation.
The spatial expansion of industrial regions along major transportation lines and toward the suburbs or the planned and newly explored industrial estates turned out to be a distinctive characterisitic of an industrial region. At the same time, within this region a hierarchically organized structure of region which is divided into core, core's peripheral, and peripheral areas can be identified. Another typical characteristics is a gradual decline of isopleth gradients as they progressed away from the industrial core.
The production of thematic maps using the modern techniques of scribing, open window negatives, and photometric methods are properly exemplified. The final production shows very accurate images and improved patterns of industrial regions comparable with current thematic maps, which contained many problems such as boundaries and regional criteria. There is no doubt that the practice of map production would provide adequate information as to educational and research material, and an understanding of the feature of Korean industrial regions.
