    본 연구는 과학 설명문 읽기 과정에서 한국인 영어 학습자의 배경지식이 추론 생성에 미치는 영향을 탐색하였으며, 특히 사고 구술 기법을 통해 실시간 인지 과정에 초점을 두었다. 참가자는 고급 영어 숙련도를 갖춘 학부생 및 대학원생 52명으로, 동일한 높은 영어 능력 기준을 적용하여 언어 능력의 영향을 통제하고 배경지식의 효과를 검증하도록 설계되었다. 생물학과 화학 분야의 두 개의 설명문을 선정하여 서로 다른 주제 영역과 텍스트 난이도 수준을 대표하도록 하였으며, 참가자들은 사전 배경지식 검사를 통해 높은 배경지식 집단과 낮은 배경지식 집단으로 분류되었다. 개별 사고구술 연구에서 참가자들은 두 개의 지문을 읽는 동안 자신의 생각을 구술하였고, 발화 자료는 전사, 절 단위 분절, 코딩을 거쳐 MAXQDA 도구로 분석되었다. 사고 구술 발화는 추론적 응답과 비추론적 응답으로 분류되었고, 추론적 응답은 연결추론, 부적절한 연결추론, 확장추론, 부적절한 확장추론, 예측추론의 추론 유형으로 세분화되었다.
    정량적 분석은 베타 회귀 모형과 베이지안 다항 혼합효과 모형을 통해 수행되었다. 배경지식은 추론의 양과 질, 유형을 유의하게 예측한 반면, 텍스트 난이도는 유의한 영향을 보이지 않았다. 베타 회귀 모형 분석 결과, 낮은 배경지식 집단은 더 많은 양의 추론을 산출하였으나 정확성과 개념적 일관성이 낮아 보상적 처리 양상이 드러났다. 반면, 높은 배경지식 집단은 적지만 더 정확하고 개념적으로 일관된 추론을 산출하였으며, 비추론 발화의 비율이 더 높게 나타나 효율적인 이해 과정을 시사하였다. 베이지안 다항 혼합효과 모형 분석 결과, 높은 배경지식 집단은 확장추론을 더 많이 산출한 반면, 낮은 배경지식 집단은 연결추론에 현저히 더 많이 의존하였다. 한편, 예측추론은 설명문의 특성상 두 집단 모두에서 드물게 나타났다.
    문장 단위의 질적 사례 분석 결과, 동일한 문장을 읽는 상황에서 참가자들의 추론 양상에 뚜렷한 차이가 드러났다. 높은 배경지식 집단은 기존 개념 지식을 통합하여 타당한 확장추론을 생성한 반면, 낮은 배경지식 집단은 과학 개념에 대한 제한된 배경지식으로 인해 부적절한 연결추론을 산출하였다. 정량적 분석과 질적 분석의 통합적 고찰을 통해, 배경지식이 설명문 읽기 과정에서 실시간 추론 생성의 양과 질, 유형 전반에 영향을 미치는 핵심 요인임이 확인되었다. 교육적 관점에서 본 연구는 읽기 전 학습자의 배경지식 활성화, 언어적 수준과 개념적 수준을 균형 있게 조정한 읽기 자료 선정, 그리고 추론 전략에 대한 메타인지적 인식 촉진을 위한 사고구술 교수법 적용의 중요성을 강조한다.

    This study investigated how background knowledge influences Korean EFL learners' inference generation in scientific expository texts, with a focus on their online cognitive processes using the think-aloud method. Fifty-two undergraduate and graduate students with advanced language proficiency participated in the study, all of whom satisfied stringent English proficiency criteria to ensure linguistic homogeneity and to examine the isolated contribution of background knowledge to reading comprehension. Two expository texts in biology and chemistry were employed to represent distinct topics and text difficulty levels, with participants' background knowledge assessed through a pretest to classify them into the high- and low-background-knowledge groups. During individual think-aloud sessions, participants verbalized their thoughts while reading, and the resulting verbal protocols were transcribed, segmented, and qualitatively analyzed using MAXQDA Analytics Pro. The think-aloud data were initially categorized into inferential and non-inferential responses, and inferential responses were further coded into specific inference types including bridging, invalid bridging, elaborative, invalid elaborative, and predictive inferences.
    Quantitative analyses were conducted with beta regression models and a Bayesian multinomial mixed-effects model. Background knowledge emerged as the primary predictor of inference quantity, quality, and types, with text difficulty having no significant effect. Beta regression model results revealed that the low-background-knowledge (LBK) group generated a greater quantity of inferences that were less accurate and more fragmented, reflecting compensatory processing. In contrast, the high-background-knowledge (HBK) group produced fewer but more accurate and conceptually coherent inferences, along with a higher proportion of non-inferential responses, suggesting more efficient comprehension. Bayesian model results indicated that the HBK group was more likely to produce elaborative inferences, while the LBK group relied more heavily on bridging inferences, and predictive inferences occurred infrequently in both groups due to the nature of expository texts.
    Complementary qualitative case analyses highlighted a striking contrast in participants' inferencing within the same sentences. The HBK group successfully integrated their prior knowledge to generate valid elaborative inferences, while the LBK group produced invalid bridging inferences due to their limited background knowledge of scientific concepts. Collectively, these findings demonstrated that background knowledge critically determines the quantity, quality, and types of inferences in processing expository texts. From a pedagogical perspective, this study underscores the importance of activating readers' background knowledge prior to reading, selecting reading materials that appropriately balance linguistic and conceptual demands, and incorporating think-aloud instruction to promote metacognitive awareness of inference strategies.
