Idle industrial facilities appear due to the economic recession and the industrial structure changes, and are recognized as a factor causing urban decline. However, idle industrial facilities play an important role both economically and socially in the age of industrialization, and have infinite potential for future use as valuable resources.
Recent increase of interest in culture has led to the revitalization of idle industrial facilities into cultural spaces. With the growing awareness of idle industrial facilities in Korea, it is time to study how to regenerate the buildings for effective use.
Therefore, the purpose of this study is to derive the plan requirements for the revitalization of idle industrial facilities into cultural spaces and to analyze the degree of application of the plan requirements through two domestic cases.
First, by reviewing seven literature on building revitalization plans, the ‘revitalization plan requirements of idle industrial facilities' to be presented to experts was derived. In the advisory stage, items of similarity, redundancy, and abstractness were removed or supplemented after discussion through expert advisors consisting of four members including architects and practitioners. In addition, 2 major categories, 6 medium categories, and 23 small categories were confirmed, including opinions from the researcher based on practical experience.
Second, the degree of application of plan requirements was analyzed in two domestic building cases that are to be regenerated into cultural space among idle industrial facilities. The cases were limited to pre-construction buildings that were won at the 2018 competition. Therefore, the building that regenerates Gunpo reservoir as Gunpo Picture Book Museum Park and the building that regenerates Seoul Thermal Power Plant as Dangin-ri Cultural Space were selected.
The following conclusions were obtained by applying two domestic building cases to the derived revitalization plan requirements.
The architectural revitalization plan requirements of the Gunpo Picture Book Museum Park were 10 reflected, 5 partially reflected, and 8 not reflected. The cultural revitalization plan requirements of the Dangin-ri Cultural Space are 10 reflected, 6 partially reflected, and 7 not reflected. (See Chapter 4, Conclusion)
This study will help to reorient the revitalization plan requirements of buildings that want to regenerate idle industrial facilities in the future. In the case of buildings that have already been regenerated or are expected to be regenerated, it is expected that the objective data will increase as the number of cases increases by understanding the degree of application of the revitalization plan requirements.
