라투르의 구성주의와 해킹의 실험적 실재론 = Latour’s Constructionism and Hacking’s Experimental Realism

국문 초록 (Abstract)

과학철학자 해킹은 라투르와 울거의 『실험실 생활』에 대해 그의 논문 한 편 전체를 통하여 그 의의를 평가한다. 해킹은 그 책의 철학적 중요성을 강조한다. 이 평가는 그 후 라투르가 과학철학만이 아니라 과학학, 여타 인문학, 사회과학 등에 큰 기여를 하는 학자가 되는 데 많은 영향을 미친다. 해킹은 영미권 과학철학의 분석적 전통에서 출발한 연구자이며 그 논문을 쓰기 몇 년 전 『표상하기와 개입하기』을 낸 바 있고 여기서 실험에 관한 철학적 연구를 제시한다. 반면 라투르와 울거는 영미권 과학철학 바깥에 있었으며, 특히 라투르는 프랑스 학자이고 신학 박사학위를 받은 이였다. 라투르는 인류학적 방법, 혹은 민족지학적 방법으로 실험실을 탐구하였는데, 이는 매우 독창적이었으며 영미권 과학철학에서는 철저히 생소한 연구였다. 당시에 해킹은 실재론/반실재론 논쟁의 맥락에 중점을 두고 실험과학의 철학에 접근했다. 이처럼 과학에 관한 인류학적 논의 맥락과 실재론/반실재론 논의 맥락의 커다란 차이에도 불구하고 『실험실 생활』과 『표상하기와 개입하기』 사이에는 많은 유사성이 있다. 이 논문에서 필자는 유사성과 더불어 차이에 대해서 살펴본다. 각각 과학인류학과 영미권 과학철학의 실재론/반실재론 논쟁 속에서 서로 다르게 시작한 라투르와 해킹의 입장을 대비하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Hacking evaluates for Latour and Woolgar’s Laboratory Life in a piece of his paper. His assessment influences for Latour’s becoming a scholar who has been contributing to science studies, humanities in general, and social science etc. as well as philosophy of science. Hacking started his career with Anglo-American philosophy of science in analytic tradition and wrote Representing and Intervening, a few years ago before his paper. In contrast, Latour and Woolgar were outside of Anglo-American philosophy of science, especially Latour is a French scholar and doctor of theology. He studied laboratory with anthropological or ethnographical method, and his study is very original and thoroughly alien to Anglo-American philosophers of science. At the time Hacking approached philosophy of experimentation in the context of scientific realism / anti-realism debate. In spite of big difference between anthropological argument and realism / anti-realism debate, there are many similarities between Laboratory Life and Representing and Intervening. In this paper, I look into both similarities and differences. With each position of Hacking’s and Latour and Woolar’s originated from different traditions, I compare with their positions.
