It is utterly critical for us to preoccupy information and data, not to lose the research leadership, and take an academic position of advantage in order to lead East Asian studies. If we do not arrange, translate, and investigate our classics actively, there is a risk of our spiritual culture being distorted by foreigners. The study of Chinese classics, Neo-Confucianism, and Yehak are part of the global spiritual culture heritage that was made to blossom to a higher level by us in the universal ideas of East Asia. It is thus urgent to publish a collection of Korean classics. Combined with this problematic consciousness was our eager wish to compile and publish, make a database, and translate Gyeongbuchonggan. This paper thus estimated its directions.
The Daedong Culture Research Institute of Sungkyunkwan University published 146 volumes of Collection of Korea's Study of Chinese Classics in 1998, but the collection had many missing materials and several problems. There is a need to do a reexamination at the national level, collect data, and publish Classics of Korea -Gyeongbuchoseo. It is also needed to review again the classification system and scope of recording before compilation and publication and make a database of the resulting books.
Raising a need to translate the entire Gyeongbuchonggan and discussing the scope of what should be translated, the paper highlighted a need to translate Small Learning and Four Books and Five Classics based on the actual circumstances of Joseon and also Geunsarok and Simgyeong at the national level for their standard translations. The methods of translation should be oriented toward common translation in principle. Translation teams should be formed by the Chinese classics and data, and an institutional device should be introduced to ensure the joint participation of expert researchers, translators, and follow-up generation research translators. Translation should be accompanied by consideration into Haeje works and publication of biographical dictionaries and glossaries.
In conclusion, the paper maintained that we should compile and publish Gyeongbu, Sabu, Jabu, Jipbu, Yehak, and Neo-Confucian Chongseo in the collection of Korean classics and distribute them home and abroad, make a database of the materials to give easy access to researchers, and translate them so that any modern people can read them in order to establish them as a collection of classics in East Asian studies and lead East Asian studies.
