These essays(I,II) are an intellectual-historical odyssey about a well known leading neo-kolbergian D. Narvaez’ theories from as a graduate student of her mentor Rest’s department, to as a present so-called ‘comprehensive moral psychologist’ against other different theorists. I trace the roots and shifting points of her researches about moral theory and moral education program, showing what makes her works seeking for the evolutionary neuroscientific ethical theory, TET, which may be astonishing to traditional or even new Kohlbergians.
Under Rest’s supervision, she was interested in participants’ comprehension abilities about DIT dilemmas, which were supposed different and more important abilities in moral judgement development than formal moral reasoning that Rest’s mentor, Kohlberg’s MJI aims to measure. In 1999, she proclaimed Minnesota neo-kohlbergian Approach that begins to differentiate themselves from Kohlberg’s main theoretical structures. After Rest was died in 1999, Narvaez realized that neo-Kolbergan approach’s original construct schema is based on tacit knowledge, which make different developmental courses from Kohlergian’s, meaning that DIT based on schema is a sound and adequate tool for real moral daily lives. Then, preferring moral functioning catergory which is corresponding to ‘4 components of morality’ to limited moral judgement concept, Narvaez with her husband Lapsley tries to bridge newly advanced construct, social-cognitive view of schema to moral identity, personality and character that are thought to be integrated to moral expertise or expert’s abilities, which will be cultivated through ‘the deliberate character education’.
However, during 2005-2006, Narvaez who already entered a complicated phase in educational practice, seeks to go beyond neo-Kohlbergian tradition, and establish a new comprehensive moral theory that could unite deliberate reasoning and tacit process or intuition, modern moral psychological frameworks and ancient moral philosophical categories such as virtue or character, de-moralized moral psychology and naturalized moral philosophy to justify the renewed moral education program, Integrative Ethical Education.
This essay(II) covers the second period, during which Narvaez found new foundational disciplines in neuroscience and evolutionary theory, and established the Triune Ethics Theory which comprised mindful morality as ultimate morality and provided ‘integrative ethical education’ with a tool to implement it.
