This study attempts to analyze the structural entity of entrance-examination competition in Korea, and formulate an analytical framework based on structural and synthetic perspectives which consider four factors, namely, state, people, education, and economy which are considered to be closely related to entrance-examination competition.
This study reached to the following conclusion.
i ) People participate in entrance-examination competition with the logic of egalitarianism. The egalitarian aspiration of people have formed the people's aspiration for education and overheated tutoring. Therefore, entrance-examination competition can be characterized by a group competition for higher social status.
ii ) State factor to education is conceptualized by the logic of efficiency. State attempts to strengthen regulation and control of education through educational reform and state's intervention to education. The logic of state reflects the needs of social control to education.
iii) Economic structure reflects interests of the capitalist class. Accordingly it looks at education by the logic of reproduction, so it wants to maintain the capitalistic economic system, and regards the competition as a social selecting mechanism.
iv) State, people, and economic factor give pressure to educational structure. At the same time education factor pursues the intrinsic value of education by the logic of educational autonomy.
In conclusion, Korean entrance-examination competition as an educational phenomenon is a reflection of the scio-structural problem, resulted in functional conflict of four factors.
