The purpose of this study is to propose the improved style and material of license number plate, which is the exterior panel of the automobile indicating the legal registration codes, in order to provide the observers with the better readability than that of the current number plate in Korea.
The results are as follows; 1) The average readable distance of the single line sample plates, in day time, is longer than that of the double life ones by 22 percent. 2) The average readable distance of the reflective sample plates, in nighttime, is longer than that of the non-reflective ones by 14.7 percent. 3) The reflective yellow captions on blue background were perfectly read farther away than the blue captions on reflective yellow backgorund by 6.4 percent. Also, there was no significant difference between non-reflective color contrasted samples; blue on yellow background and yellow on blue background.
