This study intends to examine the structual change in labor force composition in Korea in terms of its social-economic characteristics. Then some alternative employment policies are suggested.
Low rate of fertility and mortality, especially, of the aged have contributed to change in population structure and composition. On the other hand, mandatory retirement policy is widely adopted in the modern business and public sectors. The retirement age required this policy depending on sectors, ranks, sex, and so on. At any rate,both of these factors strongly contribute to early retirement of the aged who are still able and willing to work, besides change in age composition.
The second section review the literatures on finding s adressed to employment problem of the aged. The third section discuss the determinants on findings adressed to employment problem of the aged. The third section discuss the determinants of structual changes in population age and their impacts on size and composition of the dependent groups. The fourth section examines the economic status of the aged and the source of income in old age and incorporates the socio-economic characteristics of the aged into a life-cycle context. The last section discusses the cause of mandatory retirement policy, and then suggest alternative employment policies in Korea.
