‘총서’라는 거대서사 혹은 허위의식 = A Giant Epic or a False Consciousness Called ‘Imperishable History’

This thesis is the study of an “imperishable history”: a series in North Korea. The series, as they are known, are the works focused on Kim Il-sung’s biography and guerrilla resistance to Japan. This works evaluated as the greatest work in the history of North Korea’s novel for 40 years have been continuously published from 「1932」 by Kwon Jung woong in 1972 to 「Cheong San Beol」 by Kim Sam bok in 2007. At the moment, they have total 33 books on a large scale with ‘the era of anti-Japan revolution and strife’ ―17 books and ‘the era after liberation’ ―16 books. ‘The era of anti-Japan revolution and strife’ whose characters are Cha Gwang su, Kim Hyuck, Kwon Young Byuck, and Oh Jung Hueb participated in the strife represents Kim Il sung’s anti-Japan revolution as a center stem. In ‘the era after liberation’, the main ideas are Kim Il sung’s triumph and a establishment of political party, land reform and establishing a Republic of Joseon People and the war, and the crisis of nuclear and death of Kim Il sung. The heroic struggles happened to Kim Il sung and the process hardening the foundation of the government and establishing a Republic of Joseon People weave a huge epic with 33 books. The series also deal with the independence organization and students’ associations having actually acted in Manchuria and around 200 historical incidents in and out of the country. Moreover, from 80 to 200 existent persons appear on each book. This series are the historical products driving the existent persons and incidents.
In this regard, the series are the North Korea’s cultural canonical books as a source of national stories and a report of an official record. This is relevant to the fact that the series is charged of the absolute statue in North Korea and is succeeded to Kim lung it government as an “imperishable guide.” The series are the cultural canonical books representing the fact that North Korea is the system established in the basis of Manchurian guerrilla experiences and that the ideological core dominated in North Korea is consisted of the Kim Il sung’s guerrilla strife and spirit.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 북한의 총서『불멸의 역사』(이하 ‘총서’)를 연구한 글이다. ‘총서’는 알려진 대로 김일성의 일대기와 항일빨치산들의 유격대 활동을 중심 소재로 한 작품군이다. 북한소설 40년사에서 최고의 작품으로 평가되는 이 ‘총서’는 1972년 권정웅의 『1932년』을 필두로 2007년 김삼복의 『청산벌』에 이르기까지 지속적으로 출간되어 현재 ‘항일혁명투쟁시기편’(17권)과 ‘해방후편’(16권)을 통틀어 총 33권에 이르는 방대한 규모를 갖추고 있다. ‘총서’의 전편에 해당하는 ‘항일혁명투쟁시기편’은 김일성의 항일투쟁을 중심 줄기로 하면서 그의 가계와 투쟁에 동참했던 차광수, 김혁, 권영벽, 오중흡 등의 빨치산들을 주요 인물로 하고 있고, ‘해방후편’은 해방과 함께 김일성의 개선과 당 창건, 토지개혁과 조선인민공화국 건설과 전쟁, 그리고 핵 위기와 김일성 사망까지를 주요 내용으로 하고 있다. 김일성을 중심으로 벌어지는 영웅적인 투쟁, 열악한 환경에 맞서 조선인민공화국을 건설하고 정권의 기반을 다지는 과정 등이 작품의 중심 줄기를 이루면서 33권이 유기적으로 연결된 하나의 거대서사를 엮어내고 있다. ‘총서’에는 또한 만주지역에서 실제로 활동했던 30여 개의 독립단체와 학생회, 200여 개의 국내외의 역사적 사건이 다루어지며, 또 권당 80명에서 최고 200여 명에 이르는 실존 인물들이 등장한다. 이들 실존 인물과 사건을 중심으로 소설적 상상력을 구사해서 만들어진 역사물이 곧 ‘총서’인 것이다.
그런 점에서 ‘총서’는 공적 기억의 보고이자 국가 이야기의 원천으로 북한 사회의 문화 정전(正典)에 해당한다고 할 수 있다. ‘총서’는 북한에서 절대적인 위상을 점하면서 김정일 체제에서도 총서 『불멸의 향도(嚮導)』로 계승되어 지금까지 막강한 영향력을 행사하는 것은 그런 사실과 관계가 있다. ‘총서’는 북한이 만주 유격대의 경험을 바탕으로 만들어진 체제라는 사실과 김일성의 유격대 투쟁과 정신이 북한을 지배하는 이념의 중핵을 구성한다는 사실을 구체적으로 보여주는 문화 정전인 것이다.
