In this article, I grope method to reconstruct Bokja(覆字, Fuseji; a piece of printing type that is set wrong end to) of korean literature generated by censorship of an Office of Governor-General(총독부) during a period of Japanese imperialism and attempted restoration actually. In result, I present five method of restoration and can restore some Bokja by each method.
Method by context, method by manuscript in one's own handwriting, method by excavation of proof sheet, method by contrast of edition, and method by scientific treatment are the five method of restoration. It is method by context that investigators depend on mainly now among this. There is advantages that this method can apply conveniently and widely, but it is shortcoming that can not prove positively. While, other four method is troublesome and wide application is narrow, but there is advantage that positive prove is possible. If use this five method mutually complementally, possibility of restoration may rise.
Especially, method by scientific treatment is worth observing as that attempt by first in this article. I choose three sample of Bokja, commit to the National Scientific Criminal & Investigation Laboratory(국립과학수사연구소), and succeeded in restoration. Result that verify through method by contrast of edition, the rate of success of the method by scientific treatment was 59%, in case of use mixedly other method, increased by 84%. Therefore, in my judgment, if use this five methods by mixedly to more data, we can reconstruct a large part of Bokja.
