Men's clothing was profoundly affected by the growing taste for sports the inflence of which was two-fold, For one thing, it materially broke through the barriers of class; the other influencd of sportswas to spread a taste for mord comfortable clothes in daily life, by 1900, the coloured shirt was becoming accepted as day wear.
1909∼1918
Underclothes were permitting freer movement, but what was still more significant was the growing inclination to reduce the layers which covered the body. The new conception of decency which was begining to appear continued to characterize underclothing throughout the century. In men's underclothing the symbols of social rank, expect for formal occasion, wer declining.
1919∼1939
Remarkable in the period between the two wars was a new attitude of mind toward the fuction of clothing, and especially underclothing. Then the aim of costume was to emphasize the bodily shape. The conspicuous intention was to outline the regions normally sez attractive underclothing were reduced in number, extent and thickness. The American influence on men's underwear became very noticeable, with the gradual introduction of the singlet in place of the bottoned vest and the union combination garment instead of separate vest and drawers, together with a preference for thin materials such as artificial silk. A considerable are a of the skin of both sexes was covered merely by a single layer of fabric. Obviously underclothing had lost two of its original fuctions; it no longer preserved the warmth of the body nor did it disguise its essential shape. It was not the reduction in a mount but the taste for colurs that expressed the erotic impulse. Both sexed discarded the use of white underwear.
1940∼1950
The 1940's were over shadowed by the second world wars and its aftermath to an almost inestimable degree. All garments were subject to control. Service underclothing was made by the same manufacturers as the civilian utility items, so improvement in fabrics and design affected both.
