The Qing Emperor Qianlong (r. 1736-1795) collected and appreciated ancient Chinese paintings and antiques with great enthusiasm. He not only appreciated and appraised the value of his collection, but also created new works of art by rearranging paintings and antiques for his purposes. Duobaoge or “manytreasures boxes (curiosity cabinets)” is the best example of his practice of re-interpreting the antiques and curios in the Qing imperial collections. This paper examines various features of duobaoge and the representation of his collection including duobaoge in court paintings. According to the Archives of the Office of Manufacture of the Imperial Household Department in Yangxindian, Qianlong established the Department of Hundred Things to produce duobaoge in 1756. He maintained it until 1767. It explains his special interest in the making and use of duobaoge and their popularity during his reign. Qinalong’s duobaoge can be largely divided into box types and furniture types. The box type-duobaoge often has its own catalogue of the contents. The arrangement of the antiques in the furniture type-duobaoge was also thoroughly documented in the Archives of Arrangement of each palace building. The fact that these duobaoge have their own cataloging system shows that duobaoge, in themselves, are independent works of art rather than mere assemblies of precious things in his collection.
Furniture type-duobaoge were installed in various palace buildings. The duobaoge in Shufangzhai is one of the well-known existing examples. In Shufangzhai, Qianlong held tea ceremonies and enjoyed theatricalperformances with his courtiers and Hanlin scholars on the first day of the year. Qianlong used Shufangzhai as a place to receive foreign envoys after his retirement. Shufangzhai was known as one of Qianlong’s private residences. But its official function mentioned above suggests that his collection of antiques in duobaoge was not only objects of his private appreciation but also a symbol of authority working for his political purposes.
Qinglong commissioned court painters to paint in the realistic pictorial manner antiques and collectibles in duobaoge such as mirrors, bronzes, jades, ceramics, ink stones, and other curios. The paintings are visual catalogues of his collection of precious things. The presentation and housing of works of art in the imperial collections in duobaoge were art forms in themselves. His collection of antiques and curios was also found in the portraits of Qianlong such as Qianlong as Connoisseur and Is It One or Two? Theses portraits of Qianlong are considered to be pictorial versions of duobaoge, in the sense that cultural and historical values attached to his collection of precious things and antiques are carefully rearranged to establish the image of Qianlong’s emperorship.
