In this study, water quality improvement effects of actually operating cattle barns acquiring project (hereinafter, the project), which was implemented for the purpose of reducing the number of business, were analyzed. Through this, by identifying water quality changes due to the pollutant load change caused by the project in the study subject basin, it was attempted to predict the impact on conservation and improvement of water.
Water quality from 2010 to 2020 in the basin improved slightly; however, water quality standards (very bad (VI)). The mean values of BOD, COD, T-N, and T-P was 8.7 mg/L, 16.5 mg/L, 8.742 mg/L, and 0.238 mg/L, respectively. Change in pollutant sources showed a decreasing tendency with the exception of Livestock Load and Land Load.
The main pollutant source was the livestock business cluster in Yongji where mainly pigs were bred at three villages (Shinam, Biryong, and Shinheung) in the upstream region of Yongam stream. There are a total of 79 livestock farms in this area with 104,250.80㎡ of farm area. Total number of animals being bred here is 787,576, among them, pigs are 77,175.
Comparing the number of pigs bred in the Saemangeum and Mangyeong river watershed with the corresponding basins. In the basin, the total number of pigs breeding heads accounted for 8.7% and 17.0% for Saemangeum and Mangyeong, respectively. This showed that the distribution of pigs breeding was significant compared to the basin area.
By estimating the source of pollutant and discharge loads from the livestock business cluster we found that for each livestock type, total generated load was 12,258. 83 kg/day and 1,236.139 kg/day for BOD and T-P, respectively, and total discharge load was 1,103.30 kg/day for BOD. The load reduction due to the project estimated by assuming that the number of livestock heads in livestock business cluster will be decreased due to the project, the load reduction is estimated to be 1,103.30 kg/day and 92.710 kg/day for BOD and T-P, respectively.
Assuming that the entire livestock businesses could be acquired for three years between 2022 and 2025, the expected cost was calculated to be 76.7 billion KRW in total, which included 19.6 billion KRW for land compensation, 24.3 billion KRW for buildings compensation, 10.4 billion KRW for compensation for business closure by livestock type, 20.7 billion KRW for restoration of ecosystem, and 0.17 billion KRW for miscellaneous fees. Cost-benefit analysis showed that there was a reduction in BOD (1.438 kg/100 million KRW) and T-P (0.12 kg/100 million KRW). It is reviewed that those figures are more effective than the reduction cost effect, BOD 1.181kg/100 milion KRW, T-P 92.710kg/100 milion KRW in livestock manure countermeasure part of the countermeasure of Saemangeum water quality improvement, which figures were believed to be the most effective.
The effect of water quality improvement by acquiring livestock businesses in the cluster area was predicted by focusing on the Yongam stream, basin using HSPF(Hydrologic Simulation Program-Fortran) basin model. As a result of evaluating Yongam stream basin and downstream of Mangyeong River (Mangyeong bridge), BOD improved from 7.07 mg/L to 4.91 mg/L, showing an improvement of 30.46%. The BOD around the Mangyeong bridge improved from 2.27 mg/L to 2.24 mg/L, indicating an improvement of 1.41%.
Such as previous projects, such as Wanggung livestock farms and Jangsu-Gyenam pig farms, acquiring project for livestock cluster area is a fundamental measure to manage livestock pollution source that can improve the environment in surrounding areas as well as improve the quality of waters.
