The Relationship between literature and music implied in R.Schumann's Kreisleriana provides performers with specific clues to understanding the content of the music. It is thought that E.T.A. Hoffmann's novel, Kater Murr might have influenced Schumann when he wrote Kreisleriana. They share the similar structure and character.
The purpose of this paper is to compare Kreisleriana with Kater Murr in order (1) to understand how the music is structured as a unified cycle even though it is often fragmentary, and includes abrupt contrasts, and (2) to discover how Schumann associated particular compositional techniques with different kinds of emotional expression or character portrayal.
