온라인 시민 저널리즘 실천에 관한 한,미 간 비교연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 한국과 미국 두 나라를 대상으로 온라인 환경 하에서의 시민저널리즘의 실천 정도를 실증적으로 비교하기 위해 진행되었다. 연구결과를 종합하면, 한국 온라인 신문의 경우 시민저널리즘의 일상적 실천은 미약하지만 인터넷 매체의 특성은 매우 유용하게 사용하고 있다고 결론지을 수 있다. 시민저널리즘의 일상적 실천을 측정하기 위한 세부 유형에 대한 분석 결과와는 달리 온라인 미디어의 상호작용성 기제에 관한 서비스는 한국의 온라인 신문이 미국의 온라인 신문보다 훨씬 활발하게 제공하고 있는 것으로 확인되었기 때문이다.

이 연구는 온라인 환경 하에서 시민 저널리즘의 실천 정도를 실증적으로 검증하여 그 가능성을 탐색해보았다. 특히 국내의 시민 저널리즘 실천 상황을 시민저널리즘이 탄생하여 발전되어 온 미국의 시민 저널리즘 실천 정도와 비교 분석함으로써 국내 시민 저널리즘의 수준을 진단하고 문제점을 발견할 수 있는 기회를 갖고자 하였다. 국내의 경우 인터넷의 급격한 확산과 함께 시민 사회에 대한 일반인의 인식이 고양되고 또한 그 실천적 기회가 늘어났음에도 불구하고 시민 사회 발전의 주춧돌이라 할 수 있는 시민 저널리즘에 대한 이론적인 밑받침은 아직까지 충분히 제공되지 못했다. 따라서 이 연구의 결과는 일차적으로 바람직한 시민 저널리즘의 확산을 위해 사용될 수 있으며, 보다 넓게는 성숙한 시민 사회의 밑그림을 그려낼 수 있는 기초 자료를 제공할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The goal of this study is to examine and compare the contents of the online newspaper in Korea and US that might reflect the possibilities of this new medium for public journalism practice. This study examines how far and deep public journalism practices in the Korean online newspapers have extended into online journalism as journalism's new tradition. There is little actual measurement to determine how much public journalism influences everyday online journalism practice in Korea.

The analysis of this study reveals a mixed result for public journalism practice in online environments in US and Korean daily newspapers. Individual level of analysis for the public journalism index reveal that there is a difference between US and Korean online newspapers in their practice of public journalism principles. Various public journalism practices are more frequently performed in the US online newspapers than those of Korean newspapers.

On the other hands, interactivity composite scores, another index of public journalism practice, for the public journalism online papers in Korea are high and statistically different from the US online papers. However, overall usage of interactivity are low, supporting the argument of the previous studies that many newspapers simply publish the content of their counterpart print edition and make little effort to take interactive options seriously.
