Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are 3-dimensional porous materials constructed from the coordinative assembly of metal ions or clusters and organic ligands. The structure of MOFs can be readily tuned by choice of metal and organic building blocks, and could be additionally modified with diverse chemical tags. Since a variety of functionalized organic ligands have been successfully utilized in MOF syntheses, the immobilization of the catalytically active sites on MOF’s scaffold via covalent bonds are important tools for preparing stable heterogeneous catalysts. The MOF-based catalysts efficiently alleviate the decrease of catalytic activities during the reaction progress. Thus, heterogeneous catalysis using MOFs have significantly developed for organic transformations in recent years, they fulfill the requirements of green chemistry concept, and provide a compelling alternative to the homogeneous catalytic system. In this thesis, the processes of advances in catalysis from homogeneous to heterogeneous system were divided into three parts; Part I: Homogeneous europium catalysis for aerobic oxidation (Chapter 2), Part II: Pore engineering and installation functionalities of MOFs (Chapters 3 and 4), and Part III: Heterogeneous catalysis using MOFs (Chapters 5, 6 and 7).
Chapter 1 described a brief introduction and review of catalytic system development from homogeneous to heterogeneous system focus on aerobic oxidation and related chemistry during doctoral studies. In chapter 2, the development of homogeneous, europium catalysis for the selective oxidation of alcohols based on the redox cycle of europium. Europium is a lanthanide rare earth metal and is known as a key element in the chemical luminophore developments. Since europium has two relatively stable oxidation states, Eu2+ and Eu3+, which is exceptional among the various lanthanide elements, we have developed a europium-catalyzed aerobic oxidation with external oxidants utilizing the redox cycle of Eu2+/Eu3+. The reaction was performed under mild conditions with a wide substrate scope. Finally, the photoluminescence spectra clearly demonstrate the oxidation state changes that occur during the presented europium-catalyzed aerobic oxidation.
The works on Part II deal with pore engineering and installation functionalities of MOFs for efficient catalytic platform. In Chapter 3, various strategies of pore engineering to impart catalytic activities to the MOF architectures were discussed, and classified to pre-integrated ligands. In order to immobilize catalytically active metal sites on MOFs and efficiently utilize them, it would be essential to employ the coordinating functionalities into the pores and frameworks, which can anchor the metal sites with high stability and control the reactivity of the catalytic center. These synthetic strategies will provide opportunities for covering and approaching the development of MOF-based heterogeneous catalysts and show the insight for the practical functionalization and related applications of MOFs. In Chapter 4, a practical and rapid postsynthetic ligand exchange (PSE) strategy using a defect-controlled MOF was discussed. The increase of defect amounts in MOFs accelerated rates of ligand exchange in a shorter time frame. At the same time, this PSE strategy is a straightforward method to introduce a functionality into MOFs including bulky or catalytically relevant moieties. Lastly, leveraging the surface first exchange, a sequential PSE was developed to prepare multifunctional MOFs with a subtler gradient of functionalities in comparison to a core-shell MOF.
Part III described that studies on the heterogenization of homogeneous europium catalysis for aerobic oxidation in Chapter 1. In Chapter 5, The efficient and selective aerobic oxidations of alcohols have been investigated with judicious choices of europium-incorporated and/or TEMPO-functionalized zirconium-based MOFs. The role of TEMPO as the oxidant in the heterogeneous aerobic oxidation of alcohols was revealed through a series of comparisons between metal-anchored, TEMPO-anchored, and metal and TEMPO-anchored MOF catalysis. The fine tunability of MOF allowed the homogeneously and doubly functionalized catalysts for organic transformations in the heterogeneous media. In addition, the well-defined and carefully designed heterogeneous molecular catalysts displayed perfect reusability along with better catalytic performance than the homogeneous systems within identical coordinating ligands. In Chapter 6, the surface deactivated (only core-active) core-shell type-MOF catalysts were synthesized. The core part of MOFs contain TEMPO groups on the ligand as active sites for aerobic oxidation of alcohols via a simple PSE method. The porous but catalytically inactive shell ensured the size-selective permeability by sieving effects and induced all reactions to take place in the pore of catalytically active core. Surprisingly, the surface-deactivated core-shell type MOF displayed excellent size discrimination based on the tested alcohols, and their resolution from a mixture of alcohols was achieved. In Chapter 7, a functionalized MOF catalyst applied to resolve the 'benzaldehyde oxidation paradox'. Conversion of alcohols to aldehydes was acquired through aerobic oxidation using a well-known amino-oxy radical-functionalized MOF. In the same flask, a simple filtration of the radical-MOF with mild heating of the solution completely altered the reaction media to radical-free conditions, which is suitable for autooxidation of the aldehydes. The mutually exclusive, radical-catalyzed aerobic oxidation (the first step with MOF) and radical-inhibited autooxidation (the second step without MOF) are sequentially achieved in a one-pot manner by utilizing MOF catalysts. Overall, a practical and efficient method for sequential oxidation of alcohols to carboxylic acids using heterogeneous MOFs were achieved. In addition, this MOF-in-and-out method is an environmentally friendly way for the oxidation of alcohols to carboxylic acids including industrially valuable molecules (e.g., 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid) with broad functional group tolerances. Furthermore, MOF-TEMPO, as an antioxidative stabilizer, prevents the undesired oxidation of aldehydes, and the perfect ‘recoverability’ of such a reactive MOF requires a re-evaluation of the advantages of MOFs from heterogeneity.
