국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 중세 기독교 신학자들이 이슬람을 이해하고 대응한 방식을분석하여, 이들의 관점이 현대 기독교가 이슬람과 대화할 수 있는 신학적 방향에 줄 수 있는 시사점을 모색하고자 한다. 중세 기독교 세계는 이슬람의 급속한 확장과 아랍의 군사적 정복에 직면하면서 이슬람을 다양한 시각으로 해석하고자 했으며, 이를 통해 이슬람을 신학적으로 다루는독특한 관점들이 형성되었다. 레이몬드 룰(Raymond Lull), 쿠사의 니콜라스(Nicholas of Cusa)은 다양한 방식으로 이슬람을 평가하고 대응 방안을 제시했다. 레이몬드 룰은 기독교 진리를 논증하기 위해 이슬람과 철학적 논쟁을 벌였고, 쿠사의 니콜라스는 평화적인 대화와 상호이해의 틀을 모색하는 동시에 꾸란의 허구와 모순을 신학적 관점에서 논리적으로 비판했다.
이들 신학자의 신학적 주장과 이슬람에 대한 태도는 당대 기독교가 이슬람을 바라본 방식과 대응 논리를 반영하며 시대적 상황에 따른 다양한 접근 방식을 보여준다. 따라서 이 논문은 13세기-15세기 중세 신학자들의이슬람 이해를 통해 현대 기독교가 이슬람과의 관계를 어떻게 바라보고접근할 수 있을지에 대한 교훈을 도출하고자 한다.

This paper aims to analyze how medieval Christian theologians understood and responded to Islam, and to explore the implications of their perspectives for the theological direction that contemporary Christianity can take in engaging in dialogue with Islam. The medieval Christian world, confronted with the rapid expansion of Islam and the military conquests of the Arabs, sought to understand Islam from various perspectives, leading to the development of unique theological approaches to Islam. Raymond Lull engaged in philosophical debates with Islamic scholars to defend Christian truth, while Nicholas of Cusa sought a framework for peaceful dialogue and mutual understanding, simultaneously offering logical theological critiques of the Quran’s inconsistencies and contradictions. The theological arguments and stances of these theologians reflect the way contemporary Christianity viewed Islam and the corresponding response strategies, demonstrating various approaches shaped by the historical context. Therefore, this paper seeks to draw insights from the understanding of Islam by medieval theologians of the 13th to 15th centuries, in order to explore how contemporary Christianity can approach and engage with Islam.
