The Peacemakers: Faith in Willa Cather’s Death Comes for the Archbishop

국문 초록 (Abstract)

프롤로그의 추기경 회의에 나타난 유럽의 다문화주의는 미국 남서부에서도 같은 상황이었다. 이곳에서 기독교의 옛 신앙의 기초를 찾고 믿음의 교회를 세우고자 노력하는 사제들의 모습을 윌라 캐서는 오랫동안 자료수집으로 이 지역에 대한 라뚜르 주교와 바일랑 주교의 ‘화평케 하는 자’의 헌신으로 보여주고 있다.
라뚜르 주교는 험난한 고난에서도 믿음을 잃지 않고 기도로서 자신이 믿는 신과의 관계를 굳게 가지려 힘쓰며, 이러한 믿음은 멕시코 원주민에게서, 옛날부터 내려오는 성당의 기적의 이야기에서도 나타난다. 또한 주교들은 멕시코인, 미국원주민, 심지어 무자비한 사제들과도 선린관계를 유지함으로 사랑의 실천을 몸소 보여주고 있다. 사제의 ‘정원’에서, 미국원주민의 생활의 ‘풍경’에서 작가는 자연과 일치하려는 삶을 보여주고 있으나, 과도한 성당건축이나 노동착취를 일삼는 전임 사제들의 전횡도 함께 보여줌으로 라뚜르 주교와 대조를 이루고 있다.
성당의 완성은 라뚜르 주교의 이상으로 시작되었으나 자기 자신과의 관계를 완성하는 것으로 그가 인생에서 자신이 믿어온 신, 타인, 그리고 자연과의 원만한 관계인 ‘화평케 하는 자’의 표상으로 나타난다. 이로써 화평을 이룬 라뚜루 대주교는 평화로운 모습으로 이 땅을 떠나고 있다.
