극어와 비표준 질문의 기능에 대하여 = On the Functions of Polarity Items and Nonstandard Questions

Abstract
Pragmatic assumptions shared by speakers of a language may have important effects on
the logical value of certain types of sentences. Such changes in logical value are
sometimes mirrored in turn by particular syntactic properties of the sentence in question.

This paper with reference to Korean examines the functions of polarith items and
nonstandard questions in terms of the pragmatic assumptions. It shows that polarith
items are modifiers which specify the polar degree of qualities they modify and that tag
and rhetorical questions are both well-konwn indirect speech acts of polarity reversal
closely related to the speaker′s assumptions. Without grasping such functions of
polarity items and nonstandard questions. we cannot explain in a natural way why some
negative polarity items are used in affirmative questions.
