The purpose of the present study is to examine the effect of extracts of plants growing in Jeju on the growth of HL-60 leukemia cells. The effect was observed by measurement of metabolic activity and counting of viable cells. The methanol extracts of 17 plants growing in Jeju were screened for cytotoxic effect at the concentration of 100㎍/㎖. In result, the inhibitory effect on the growth was observed in the treatment of crude extracts of 6 plants. In particular, Thuja oriental is, Eurya emarginata, Mallotus japonic us, Viscum album markedly Inhibited the growth of HL-60 cells. The extracts of Viscum album, Thuja orientalis and Eurya emarginata induced DNA fragmentation in HL-60 cells. The results indicate that inhibitory effect of Viscum album, Thuja oriental is and Eurya emarginata on the growth of HL-60 seem to arise from the induction of apoptosis.
