Ceramics play three roles in one, at the intersection of everyday life, commerce, and
art, and as a practical object, a commodity, and a collector's item simultaneously.
Those have led to the close relationship between ceramic products and daily life,
production, consumption and taste, which provides a variety of perspectives to observe
the history and study of ceramics, and allows for the illumination of many other issues
beyond the ceramic itself. At the beginning of the 17th century, with the frequent
trade of goods after the establishment of maritime trade routes between the Qing
Dynasty and the British Empire, large quantities of Chinese tea and ceramics entered
Britain, which had an impact on the lifestyles, society and even culture of the British
people in the 18th century. Through a study of ceramic tea set design culture, this
paper observes how British ceramics have integrated oriental ceramic products with a
strong exotic flavor, translating them into a part of the local British ceramic culture.
At the same time, this process of translation also implies that British society's initial
imitation and appreciation of oriental culture, and gradually changed to the
self-consciousness of establishing a strong cultural identity belonging to the British
    Empire.
This paper uses the literature review in qualitative research and an interdisciplinary
research approach. By coding and analyzing different research literature and
information in a hierarchical way through the grounded theory approach. From a wide
range of British ceramic design cultures this research focuses on the process of
reference, integration, and de-Chineseization, summing up an analysis framework of
the localization of British ceramic tea set. Through the transdisciplinary research of
ceramic studies, design studies and material culture studies are combined. Ceramics
study focuses on the materials, glazes, patterns, and craft characteristics; design study
focuses on the production, appearance and usage of products; and material culture
studies examine the power relations between different actors from the perspective of
people and society. Taking ceramic tea set design as an example, the paper analyzes
the way of British ceramics integration and de-Chineseization, successfully
reconstructing British ceramic culture from four perspectives: the production of the
British ceramic industry, the design style of the products, the way ceramic tea sets are
used, and the cognitive value of ceramic tea sets by the British. It also reflects part
of the changing the British manufacturing sphere, aesthetic sphere, lifestyle sphere,
and social and cultural sphere in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The changing of British ceramic design culture is also the localization of British
porcelain from imitation to innovation. In terms of the production system of the
porcelain industry, there were discoveries and innovations in the raw materials,
craftsmanship and management methods of British ceramics. This prompted the design
to be separated from the industrial production as an independent link in it, so as to
cooperate with the professional artists with aesthetic literacy and creative ability in
product development, which has greatly innovated and enriched the types and styles of
British ceramic products. Secondly, the design aesthetics of ceramic tea set products is
reflected in the design changes in the variety of shapes, innovative and diverse glaze
aesthetics and decorative patterns that are more in line with British tea drinking and
tea set usage habits. The changes of styles have gone through the process from
Rococo Chinese style, to neoclassical style, and then to romantic style. Thirdly, The tea
drinking habits of British tea drinkers and the use of ceramic tea sets in the tea
drinking space led to a new demand for tea sets. Finally, the value cognition and
views of ceramic tea sets in related fields reflected the intricate power relations in
British society at the time, including the clash between foreign and local cultures, the
heightened awareness of women's power, the contention of class discourse in British
society and the emergence of a new middle-class subject consciousness. Britain has
successfully internalized the tea culture and ceramic culture from the East into cultural
symbols with its own characteristics, and established a mature and unique ceramic
industry and ceramic products, which were inseparable from the growing national- 123 -
power and wealth of Britain in the 18th to 19th century. The British Empire's
recognition of its own culture and self-confidence in its strong national strength is the
inevitable result of British porcelain's road to independence and self-awareness. By
reconstructing everyday ceramic products to the social life at that time, the
comprehensive perspective on the field of ceramics studies can extend the current
object-centered paradigm to interpret objects in a more three-dimensional and
multi-faceted ways. Enriching the cognitive and intrinsic research perspectives on
    ceramics.
