The purpose of this study is to investigate the characterization and application of fractionated chitosan by ultrafiltration method. The distribution of molecular weight was measured by GPC and the physicochemical properties of fractionized chitosan were investigated by 1H NMR, FT-IR, DSC, and TGA. This study, we take advantage of fractionized chitosan to remove harmful algae. We harvested chitosan with accurate molecular weights, narrow molecular weight distribution and high purity. These results introduced that the chitosan can be applied to the various field such as treatment of fresh water and biomedical fields. **This work was supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) grant funded by the Ministry of Science, ICT & Future Planning.
