懶翁惠勤의 수륙재 小參에 대한 정신분석학적 고찰 = A Psychoanalytic Study of the small sermons in the Naong Hwasang Yurok (『懶翁和尙語錄』)

This study explores the small sermons (⼩參) in the Naong Hwasang Yurok (『懶翁和尙語錄』) through a psychoanalytic lens, focusing on Naong Hye-geun (懶翁惠勤)'s public teachings during Suryukjae ceremonies. The small sermons reveal Master Naong's efforts to stabilize people's livelihoods and care for their inner peace, as seen in his performance of the National Suryukjae Ceremony upon the passing of Princess NokukDaejang and King Gongmin.
To explore the intersubjective exchange between Naong and the masses, this study first analyzes the psychoanalytic psychological mechanisms found in the Story of Muian Rescues His Mother featuring Sutra on the Ullambana Festival. On this basis, it identifies patterns of projective identification, mourning, and sublimation as defense mechanisms at work in the small sermons.
Furthermore, Naong's vow to renounce the world for liberation from birth and death, together with his final Nirvana Buddhist rite, culminates in a view in which life and death are one and the same, and the ordinary mind is the Way. Through these Zen principles embodied in the Suryukjae Ceremony, Naong guides not only the deceased but also the assembly to take refuge in the Three Jewels.
This act of taking refuge can be understood as a psychological mechanism that opens new horizons for contemporary psychological approaches to death.
