<비둘기의 날개>에 나타난 낭만적 특징 = The Romantic Quality of The Wings of the Dove

While Henry James is generally regarded as the 'realist', he was deeply interested in the literary tenets and ideals of romantic quality. The Wings of the Dove, which is one of the romantic novels, reveals some important romantic aspects. Especially, the main character Milly Theale was endowed with splendid romantic qualities. She is an extraordinary millionaire and even loses her family, relatives and friends. This situation gives her freedom and privilege from all social limitations. She appears as a romantic princess of fairy tales and the main story is focused on romantic love. It also shows us romantic quality of 'moral polarization' between Milly Theale and Kate Croy. Hyperbole, indirect expressions and image are effective factors for romantic qualities at this novel. Milly is symbolized as 'Dove' in the novel, hence, she hides everything in it and shows her inner consciousness through that image. With this image, she not only forgives Kate and Densher but also covers them with her wings of the dove.
