South Korea’s rapid shift to a super-aged society has made old-age poverty, depression, suicide, and fears of dying alone urgent public issues. This study interprets older adults’ use of social places as spatial practices through which social relations are forged and social capital is produced. Drawing on grounded theory from in-depth interviews and participant observation, we find that use of social places is motivated by surplus time, relief from domestic discomfort and loneliness, and anxieties about institutionalization and death. These motives shape preferences for regular and open settings, affordability, transport access, environmental and psychological comfort, opportunities for networking, and memory-evoking vitality. Social places function as opportunity structures accessed according to mobility capital and preferred network forms. By entering these places and actively mobilizing ties, older adults establish a basis for acquiring functionally distinct social capital. We identify four types of use—loose-solidarity, open/autonomous, institutional, and tight-knit—fostering, respectively, weak-bonding, weak-bridging, strong-linking/bridging (hybrid), and strong-bonding ties. Interactions between connectivity and tie strength yield basic bonding, expansive stimulus, institutional trust, and care-based bonding social capital. By spatially reframing Lin’s (2001) capitalization model, this study highlights social place and spatial accessibility as mediating conditions in the formation of social capital in urban later life.
