퇴계와 율곡의 독서용어를 통한 고전독서이론의 정립

국문 초록 (Abstract)

<퇴계와 율곡의 독서법 용어를 통한 고전독서이론의 모색>

본 고는 퇴계와 율곡의 독서법 용어를 통해 고전독서이론을 모색하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 퇴계와 율곡의 全書를 통해 드러난 독서 관련 용어들을 찾아내 분류하고 그에 따른 양상을 제시하였다. 분류된 양상을 근거로 특징들을 밝힘으로써 퇴계와 율곡의 독서법에 대한 전체적 밑그림을 제시하였다. 여기에 독서이론의 근거가 될 수 있는 독서법 용어들을 다시 적출하여 고전독서이론으로 정착할 수 있는 모색점을 밝혔다. ‘고전독서이론’이라고 했지만 퇴계와 율곡에 국한되었기에 온전한 고전독서이론이라 할 수는 없다. 비록 미비한 점이 없지는 않지만 이를 바탕으로 고전독서이론에 대한 연구를 계속하여 하나의 이론으로 정립하고자 한다. 고전독서이론의 현대적 계승 방안을 제시하는 것으로 글을 마무리 하고자 한다.
오늘날의 독서법은 理의 본질을 체득하려는 수양론적 차원과는 상거한 정보 습득만을 위한 실용론적 차원에 중점을 두고 있다. 그런 점에서 과거의 독서법과는 상당한 차이를 보이고 있다. 과거에는 수양론적 차원의 독서법을 중심으로 전개해 나갔다면, 오늘날은 실용론적 차원의 독서법을 중심으로 전개해 나가고 있다. 그 결과, 용어는 동일해도 의미의 폭과 범주는 달라졌다. ‘정독’을 예로 들면, 실용론적 차원의 정독은 지식과 정보를 지향한 데 비해 수양론적 차원의 정독은 의리를 지향하고 있다. 두 차원의 용어가 같더라도 지향하는 바가 다르므로, 형식은 같으나 본질은 판이하다고 할 수 있다. 현대 독서인에게 실용론적 차원이 수양론적 차원 이상으로 요구되지만 독서가 단순히 지식습득을 위한 방편에 국한되어서는 안 된다. 마땅히 현대의 독서이론도 수양론적 차원을 한 축에 두고 나가야 할 것이다. 그런 점에서 고전독서이론의 모색은 우리의 독서 가치를 현대에 계승하는 하나의 방법론이 될 수 있다. 즉 고전독서이론의 대중화 작업을 통해 고전독서의 본질적 가치를 현재독서의 가치로 끌어올릴 수 있는 계기가 될 수 있을 것이다.

<An Inquiry into the Classical Reading Theory through the Terms on Reading Method of Toegye and Yulgok>

This study is made out in an attempt to establish our own reading theory through the terms about reading method of Toegye and Yulgok. For doing this, this study searches for the terms related to reading in all of the works of Toegye and Yulgok, classifies the aspects on the theory of reading method they suggested, and specifies the characteristics of the theory. As a result, this study is able to extract the terms related to the reading method in all of the works of Toegye and Yulgok so as to lay a foundation for the theory of classical reading. In addition, by presenting the meaning and the usages of the terms related to the reading method, this study is to inquire into the theoretical grounds and perspectives which are able to be settled into classical reading theory. It is not possible to say that this study is a comprehensive research for the classical reading theory because this study’s object of study is limited in the terms of Toegye and Yulgok. However, this study has a significant meaning in that this study reconsider the value of the classical reading theory by way of Toegye and Yulgok.
