전법사로서의 광덕의 삶과 사상 = A Study on the Life and Thought of Gwangdeok as a Preacher

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 광덕의 전법을 통해 그의 삶과 사상을 살피는 글이다. 광덕의 삶은 크게 출가기, 구도기, 전법기로 살펴볼 수 있다. 출가기에서는 그가 출가에 이르기까지의 삶을 살펴볼 것이다. 광덕은 어릴 적부터 가까운 이의 죽음을 마주하여 죽음에 대한 공포가 남달랐다. 자신도 병을 앓게 되자 죽음이 남의 일이 아님을 알게 된다. 이를 해결하기 위하여 그는 죽음과 관련한 독서와 사색 등 여러 노력을 기울이게 된다. 구도기에서는 그의 구도활동을 살펴볼 것이다. 요양을 위해 머물렀던 범어사에서 만난 동산스님으로부터 큰 가르침을 얻게 되어, 이후로 자신의 앎을 정립하기 위해 처절하게 구도생활을 이어간다. 그리고 동산, 소천, 용성의 뜻을 이어 한국불교가 처한 근본적인 문제를 파악하였고, 그 해결의 실마리로 중생의 자립에 대해 주목하였다. 전법기에서는 잡지 〈불광〉 출판 이후의 삶을 살펴볼 것이다. 그는 전법을 위해 출판, 법회, 예술 활동의 측면에서 활동을 하였다. 중생이 곧 부처임을 밝히기 위한 그의 노력은 〈불광〉이라는 잡지로, 불광법회로, 찬불가로 드러난다. 전법활동의 목표는 중생들에게 아는 불교가 아닌 하는 불교의 재미를, 죽은 불법이 아닌 산 불법을 전해주고자 함에 있다. 결국 중생의 자립을 위함이었다. 불법은 중생의 삶 속에서 생생해져야 하며, 이는 중생의 근기를 고려한 다양한 전법을 통해 이뤄져야 한다. 이러한 전법활동을 통해 기복신앙이 아니라 자립을 위한 신앙으로 나아가고자 했던 그의 사상을 살필 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article examines Gwangdeok's educational thought throughout his life and his teaching activities. His life can be largely divided into the period of leaving home for the Buddhist priesthood, that of seeking the truth, and that of teaching Buddah-Darma. In the account of leaving home, I looked into his life until he left home. Gwangdeok faced the death of someone close to him in his childhood, which left him in terror of death. When he falls ill himself, he learns that death is no stranger to him. Gwangdeok put a lot of effort to overcome this mortal terror, including reading books and contemplation. In particular, this study focuses on his search for answers through reading books and examines his activities during this period in detail. He got a great lesson from Ven. Dongsan, whom he met at Beomeosa Temple where he stayed for recuperation. Since then he desperately continues his life of seeking to establish his awareness. Furthermore, following the guidance of Dongsan, Socheon, and Yongseong, Gwangdeok recognized the fundamental challenges confronting Korean Buddhism and put importance on the self-reliance of people as leads to help solve them. He sought to impart to all sentient beings the joy of Buddhism that transcends common misconceptions and the living Dharma unrestricted to the past. To achieve this goal, he engaged in a variety of activities, such as publication, legal events, and artistic endeavors. His efforts to promote the idea that all sentient beings have the potential for Buddhahood resulted in publishing the journal, Bulgwang, hosting the Bulgwang Dharma Assembly, and composing Buddhist hymns. The ultimate goal of his activities was to promote self-reliance among all sentient beings. Gwangdeok believed that Dharma must come alive in the lives of all sentient beings and that this could only be achieved by adopting different strategies that consider the fundamental nature of sentient beings. He sought to inspire all sentient beings with his belief in the power of self-reliance and faith, rather than merely praying for blessings. His message was that one must take an active role in creating one's own destiny, rather than a passive one in relying on external forces.
