중국 거사불교의 전개 과정과 그들의 활동에 대하여 = History and Current Situation of Chinese Lay-Buddhism

국문 초록 (Abstract)

중국에 불교가 뿌리내리고 역사 속에서 화려하게 꽃 피울 수 있었던 배경에는 출가자뿐만 아니라 재가자(在家者), 즉 거사(居士)들의 뛰어난 활약이 있었다. 중국 거사불교의 역사는 대체로 9시기로 분류할 수 있다.
중국에서 거사는 남성만을 지칭하지는 않는다. ‘여거사(女居士)’라는 표현도 있다. 따라서 거사의 개념을 설정하고자 한다면, 남녀를 모두 포괄해야 할 것이다. 거사가 있기에 ‘거사불교’가 성립할 수 있다. 거사불교에는 거사의 신행 활동, 호법, 포교, 경제적 지원 등이 포함된다. 역사에서 거사들의 역할은 어느 정도를 차지할까? 자료에 따르면, 불교가 발전하는 과정에서 거사의 역할은 결정적이었다고 말할 수 있다.
조박초는 중국불교협회회장이면서, 동시에 중국인민정치협상회의 전국위원회 부주석을 지낸 정치적 거물이었다. 격동의 시대, 특히 종교는 아편이라고 외치는 공산당이 통치하던 중국에서 전전긍긍하던 불교의 불씨를 보존하여 오늘날 화려한 불교의 부활로 이끌어 주었던 인물이다.
현대사회의 전환 과정에서 인간불교(즉, 사람을 중심으로 한 불교)는 중국불교의 발전 방향을 제시하였고 미래 불교의 발전을 위한 중요한 참고가 되는 동시에 지도적 역할을 수행하고 있다. 현재 중국의 인간불교 사상은 그 구성과 운영 면에서 중국불교 발전의 표본이 되었다고 할 수 있다.

Because there is a lion, 'Lay-Buddhism' can be established. In Lay-Buddhism, it is necessary to cover the activities of the Buddhist priesthood, the law, the mission, and the economic support. So what is the role of the masters in the history of Chinese Buddhism? From the data, it can be said that the role of the ambassador was crucial in the process of Buddhism.
In the transition process of modern society, human Buddhism presented the direction of development of Chinese Buddhism and played a leading role as an important reference for the development of future Buddhism. The construction and operation of the human Buddhist has become a model for the formation and development of religion in China now.
