Since May. 2010, Korea has approved novel food ingredients not having chance to face yet in domestic, by assessing their food safety. However, it has not ben settled in some criteria because of no systemic case studies on availability of novel food ingredients and lacking of the information on ingredients that could be possibly developed and distributed. Therefore, the National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation (NIFDS) established the list of 8 approved novel food ingredients followed by safety evaluation research and analysis of foreign nations(U.S., EU, Australia/New zealand, Canada and China) on current status and properties of the novel food ingredients. ※ The list of 8 approved new food materials : Buglosoides oil, Alanblackia sed oil, Citrus aurantium subsp., Lophatherum gracile, Mesona chinensis, Plumeria rubra, cofe pulp, Odontela aurita The current approval status of novel fod ingredients for more in domestic and foreign were investigated, and the ingredients are classified in plants, microrganisms, animals, and other type. Since there are some different safety evaluation fields (manufacturing method, hazard materials, and more) needed to be considered on each type, this project established there safety evaluation guidelines for novel food ingredients derived plants, microrganisms and insects. U.S. and some countries conducted risk assessment on cloned-animal's meat and milk product because its intake possibility as food has increased even though it has not globally accepted its consumption. Therefore, the National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation (NIFDS) established the cloned-animal originated food safety evaluation guideline suitable to Korea according to the research and study on the recent regulations and the safety evaluation reports of U.S., EU, and Japan. These created guidelines for botanic, insect and microbial originated novel fiod ingredients safety evaluation and for cloned-animal originated food ingredients safety evaluation will be applicable as a base while setting their standards and assessing the safety as food.
