청담의 불교현대화 사업과 정신 계승 - 교육·포교·역경을 중심으로 -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 고찰은 한국 현대기의 고승으로 조계종단 재건의 중심인물인 청담이 수행한 불교현대화사업을 정리한 글이다. 청담은 식민지 불교의 잔재를 청 산하고, 한국불교의 정체성을 정립하기 위한 불교정화운동을 1950년대에 추진하였다. 청담은 정화운동을 추진하면서, 그리고 정화운동을 일단락시 킨 이후 10년간 정화운동의 이념을 실천하려고 노력하였다. 그것이 요컨대 불교현대화사업이며, 이를 3대 사업이라 지칭하기도 한다. 이런 배경에서 필자는 다음과 같은 내용에 초점을 맞추어 주목하고자 하였다. 첫째, 종비생 제도이다. 이는 종단 장학생을 선발하여 불교중흥 및 발전에 이바지하게 하자는 것으로, 즉 불교정화운동의 이념을 실천한 엘리 트 승려를 선발·육성하려는 제도이다. 둘째, 군종제도이다. 이는 군포교를 전담할 장교를 선발, 육성, 투입하여 일반 군인들을 포교케 하는 방안이다. 셋째, 역경사업이다. 역경사업을 전담할 기관을 만들어 운영하자는 것이다. 여기에서 나온 것이 동국대에 세운 동국역경원이다. 넷째, 청담의 불교정 화정신의 계승을 강조하였다. 이를 위해 필자는 조계사에 있던 불교정화 회관의 복원과 불교정화운동 기념일 제정을 주장하였다. 이와 같은 내용에 주목한 이 글이 청담사상, 불교정화운동, 조계종단 정 체성 연구에 참고가 되길 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This review summarizes the Buddhist modernization project carried out by Cheongdam(청담), the central figure in the reconstruction of the Jogye Order, as a high priest of modern Korean times. Cheongdam promoted a Buddhist cleanup movement in the 1950s to clean up the remnants of colonial Buddhism and establish the identity of Korean Buddhism. Cheongdam tried to practice the ideology of the purification movement for 10 years while promoting the purification movement and after finishing the purification movement. In short, it is a Buddhist modernization project, which has been referred to as one of the three major projects. Against this background, I tried to have the following focus in this article. First, it is the elite monks system(종비생 제도). It is a system to select and foster elite monks who practiced the ideology of the Buddhist purification movement by selecting scholarship students and contributing to the revival and development of Buddhism. Second, it is a military system An officer dedicated to missionary(군종제도). This is a plan to select, nurture, and deploy officers in charge of military missionary work to missionary ordinary soldiers. Third, it is a adversity project(역경), and it is to create and operate an institution dedicated to the adversity project. What came out of this was Dongguk Yeokgyeongwon(동국역경원), which was built in Dongguk University. Fourth, it emphasized the succession of the Buddhist purification spirit in Cheongdam. To this end, I insisted on the restoration of the Buddhist Purification Center in Jogyesa Temple and the establishment of an anniversary of the Buddhist Purification Movement. It is hoped that this article, which has such contents, will serve as a reference for the study of Cheongdam ideology, Buddhist purification movement, and the identity of Jogye Order.
