University Newspaper is just as significant, nevertheless existing within the university being printed for people on campus, in its roles and functions as other established media in a sense that it is for a great number of people. For the fact that it becomes the path for communication between university members, its role is especially very important. Considering the current status however, it can be witnessed that university newspaper is not properly performing its role as a path for communication within the campus society. To guard the power of influence and draw attention from readers as a medium, university newspaper needs to work on improving the visual aspects where it most lacks its competitiveness against other media.
The object of this study is to find solution for newspaper design with a layout that is nice to look at and easy to read through promoting individuality and distinguishment adopting positive design on the pages of newspaper. Also through analyzing university newspapers, find out what the traits of layout and editing are of university newspapers and study methods for betterment and direction of aim.
This study is of something that has analyzed and arranged dividing the constituents into several categories determining that visual design of newspaper pages plays a very significant role in the formation of university newspaper’s image. To perform such, 6 school newspapers of domestic women’s universities –Duksung Women’s University, Dongduk Women’s University, Seoul Women’s University, Sungshin Women’s University, Sookmyung Women’s University, Ehwa Women’s University - have been chosen for the study. The Analysis on each paper has been performed around constituents of the cover page. This was in consideration of the cover page having the most exposure and contributing the most in forming the visual identity of the newspaper with the title of the paper.
The constituents of design editing of university newspapers cover page can be observed divided as title of paper, typeface, color, pictures, layout, grid system, lines and space, advertisements, and etc. This thesis has analyzed comparing these constituents, set as standards, of 6 domestic women’s universities’ newspapers. Through analyzing the allocation of the consisting visual constituents, it has been pursued to seek problems in the layout and paper design, and solution for amelioration.
As a result of analyzing the cover pages, the domestic university newspapers are making efforts in visualizing the page. However, it was noticeable that they were yet always produced within a certain frame not being able to make pages more animated for the reasons of newspaper-specific bounds. Moreover, due to using not properly defined rules, an emergence of a number of factors that are rather deteriorating the readability and causing confusion of information. It is necessary to deliver information fast and accurately through establishing consistency and unity among all of the visual constituents by maintaining harmony with considerations to space and graphics used around the page along with rules of the constituents.
For newspapers to continue to maintain readers’ attention and the power of influence as a medium in the 21st century, it is crucial to no longer consider design editing as another mere process of newspaper production or a simple tool for editing pages. The participants that are involved in university newspaper should give thoughts to ‘how you can make newspaper better’ with professional knowledge adopting the concept of art direction. University newspapers also need to continuously try to reform and renovate the pages through utilizing visual information following the change of times.
