가구소득과 아동기의 건강 불평등 = Family Income and Child Health Gradient in Korea

The relationship between income and health is an important policy related issue and a large empirical literature in economics and other social sciences has provided evidence that there is a positive association between them in adulthood. However, the mechanisms by which income is related to health still remain controversial due to the reverse causality problem. This article investigates the relationship between family income and child health to find out the origin of the positive association between health and income in adulthood. For that purpose, we estimate a random effect panel ordered probit model for children whose age ranges from 0 to 17 using Korea Welfare Panel Study. In Korea, not only children`s health is positively related to household income, but also the relationship becomes more pronounced with children`s age up to 13 years old stage and slightly decreases afterwards. Part of the positive relationship can be explained by the impact of chronic conditions. Children from lower income households with chronic conditions tend to have relatively worse health than those from higher income households do. As a result, poorer children enter the adulthood period with worse health status and less education and this may result in the positive association between income and health in adulthood.
