This paper specifically examines in what form and through what process changing of spiritual understanding of supervisee appears, and argues for its causes and factors. This paper also shows what form and content of supervision as well as what supervisory acts influences change of spiritual understanding of the supervisee. On the basis of these observations I aim to supply basic data to prepare for a plan that can promote changing of spiritual understanding of supervisee in Pastoral counseling supervision.
In order to achieve the purpose of study, I try to see and understand changing of spiritual understanding from a supervisee's perspective, I choose to use the 'Grounded Theory Method' of Strauss and Corbin (2001) out of some other methods of the Qualitative Study to express the experience of a special and private changing of spiritual understanding of supervisee and the experience of their supervision. Data are collected by 'In-depth interview investigation' and 'Participation observation method'. The total number of supervisees is 15; 3 supervisees in their twenties, 6 in their thirties, 4 in their forties, and 2 in their fifties. Four of them are Roman Catholics, and the other 11 are Protestants, all of them being seminary students and clergymen.
In this study, I observe 'narrow-minded understanding on death and disease' and 'bitter experiences of inhospitality' as major igniting factors of changing of spiritual understanding, and present 'supervisor's way of treating supervisees' and 'experience of holiness' as major strengthening factors.
