Nature hus been the first object which men have most carefully observed, since it supplied them with the environment and the means of life. But nature is rather threatening than favorable, and men have made every effort to contract friendship with it. That is why primitives personified and spiritualized nature, and established a mystic relationship with it.
That is to say, they put themselves and their surroundings in the same category. Such an interpretation of men must have been based on empirical knowledge of natural phenomena. For example, such a tale about the birth of father as Dangoon myth or Joomong myth must have been inferred from botanical phenomena, thanks to agricultural experience. Therefore, we can understand that myth is not a superstition or a fantastic romance but a man's primitive creation f unified on the view that man and nature are in the same class.
When man is supposed to be identified with plant, he is supposed to be made by such energies as water and solar heat. This supposition brings about a belief that the source of life is sky or underground, and hills and waters give life to man.
As Northrop Frye said, men come to give less attention to nature in proportion as science develops. Thus literature is thought to be more concerned with human problems and conflicts However, some modern writers take interests in nature and try to understand the substance of human being. Such an effort might give the impression that it is behind the tines But poet's attitude is different from scientist's, and the mythological approach is not a new idea. That is why we try to understand literary works by means of myth and archetypes.
As we examined it, modern writers try to connect men with nature, and identify human growth and activities with geographical phenomena. Like a certain pattern of cultural change and divergence, the pattern of literature has changed from simple one to complex one. Meantime, many writers consider myth as the spring of creation. And many critics believe that myth is the key in the interpretation of literary works. Man is universal existence who lives together with nature, according to the universal order. Consequently, every effort will be continuously made to understand human beings through cosmological imagination.
