The purpose of this review was to investigate comprehensively the effectiveness of reading strategies on readers` reading comprehension basing on meta-analytic research which is performed to combine the results of the experimental studies. Especially, this study examined the effects of some reading strategies such as story structure strategy, summarization strategy, question generation strategy and visualization strategy that have been widely used to understand texts. Results indicated that overall average effect sizes of story structure strategy, summarization strategy, question generation strategy and visualization strategy are .82, .88(.69), .92,.29(.48), respectively. These effect sizes correspond to the 79, 81(76), 82, 61(68)st percentile respectively, indicating that the reading comprehension score of the average individual in the experimental group exceeds the score of the average individual in the control group. For moderator variables, treatment length and treatment type were found to be significant for readers` reading comprehension of texts. These findings suggest that teaching reading strategies to readers may sufficiently facilitate their comprehension of texts. As useful tools to facilitate readers` reading comprehension, reading strategies are important. Also, a variety of studies have provided specific empirical evidence to support their effects on reading comprehension of texts. Nevertheless Korean language arts curriculum has not considered reading strategies as important education contents for reading education. They should be significantly reflected in the revised Korean language arts curriculum.
