통속성의 확대와 탐정소설과의 역학관계 = Vulgarization and relation of the Detective Fiction

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1930년대 후반 우리 문학사에서 두드러진 변화 중 하나는 소설의 장편화에 따른 통속화 경향이다. 이는 식민자본주의의 발달과 더불어 진행된 신문·잡지매체의 지면 확대와 독자의 문화적 욕구의 성장과 긴밀한 연관을 가진다. 1930년대 대표적인 모더니스트로 평가되는 박태원 역시 이 시기 많은 장편소설을 연재했다. 그러나 이 시기 그의 작품은 그 문학적 성과가 매우 미미한 것으로 평가받고 있다. 그의 대표적인 통속소설이라 할 수 있는 『금은탑』 역시 그러한 평가로부터 자유롭지 못하다. 더구나 박태원의 통속소설에 대한 연구에서도 『금은탑』은 소외되어온 측면이 강하다.
그러나 『금은탑』에 드러난 통속성의 문제는 단순히 인기와 대중에 영합한 결과물이 아니다. 오히려 그것은 박태원의 창작기법인 ‘고현학’을 통속성과 결합시켜 극단까지 밀어붙인 결과물이라는 점에서 박태원 연구사에서 간과될 수 없는 중요한 의미망을 확보한다. 백백교 사건이라는 희대의 종교 사기극의 전모를 파고드는 이 작품의 서술태도는 박태원이 고현학을 통해 추구하고자 했던 ‘탐정’의 모습에 근접해 있기 때문이다. 이에 본고는 『금은탑』에 드러난 통속성의 문제를 구체적으로 파악함으로써, 박태원의 소설적 행보에서 『금은탑』이 가지는 문학적 위상을 발견하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Vulgarization of novels is one of remarkable changes late in 1930’s korean literary history. It is related to the growth of media(newspapers and magazines) and reader’s cultural desire with development of colonial capitalism. Bark Tae-won, who is one of representative modernists, seri- alizes a lot of novels in this time. His work in this time, however, is evaluated of which literary fruit is low. 『A Tower in Gold and Silver』, which is his representative popular novel, is not free from this evaluation. Besides, this work is neglected in established study of Bark Tae-won’s popular novels.
Vulgarization in 『A Tower in Gold and Silver』 is not result simply to compromise with popularity and the general public, but it is result from which he presses the method of Modernology against an extreme. So we can confirm important means from it which is not able to pass over in study of Bark Tae-won’s novels. Because descriptive attitude of this work, which investigates the truth of the religion Baek-baek(白白敎), is close to ‘a detective’ of Modernology. Hence this thesis intends to grasp vulgarization in 『A Tower in Gold and Silver』 concretely. From this, we can newly find the literary status of 『A Tower in Gold and Silver』.
