The Korean Demilitarized Zone has caused not only the spatial division of the Korean Peninsula but also the underdevelopment and the alienation in its adjacent area(the border region) over the past 60 years. However, recently the growing importance of the regions domestically and globally requires more studies in cultural and historical geography on the border region, focusing on the border region of Gyeonggi province.
Therefore, this study investigates geographic distribution of cultural relics in Gyeonggi province for the construction of basic spatial data which cultural and historical geographers can utilize. Regional scales are 9 administrative districts : Ongjin-gun, Ganghwa-gun, Gimpo-si, Paju-si, Yeoncheon-gun, Goyang-si, Yangju-si, Dongducheon-si, Pocheon-si. This study gathers data from the surveys of cultural remains distribution maps and HGIS which have been partially performed in each region. In addition, this study describes the geographic characteristic on the regions by understanding the geographic distribution of cultural relics classified as chronological, typological characteristics and designated cultural heritage.
The results of this study indicate that the border region of Gyeonggi province is a cultural and historical landscape itself as well as the essential region historically in political, economical, cultural, and military fields. Furthermore, many of the cultural ruins have been damaged due to the Korean war, access difficulty, and development. Thus, it is necessary to optimize heritage geographic information service, diversify contents of the cultural heritage in the border region and introduce advanced exploration techniques for exploring the cultural relics.
