A new tumor-associated glycoprotein (TAG-72) has been shown to be expressed in a wide variety of epithelial malignant tissues. We studied the serum levels of TAG-72 antigen in some malignant tumors of digestive system (n= 44), compared with benign diseases of digestive organ (n=35) and the normal subjects (n=35). The results were as follows; 1) The mean value of serum CA 72-4 was 1.69+0,50 U/ml in the normal subjects. 2) There was no significant difference of serum CA 72-4 levels between patients with benign disease of digestive organ and the normal subjects (p>0.05). 3) Levels of serum CA 72-4 in patients with gastric caner or hepatoma appeared significant increase than those of either the normal subjects or benign diseases (p<0.05). 4) There was significantly increased levels of serum Ca 72-4 in patients with advanced gastric cancer than those with early gastric cancer (p<0.05). In gastric cancer, CA 72-4 identified 45.8% of all patients (CA 19-9, 22. 2%. CEA 40.0%), and combination of CA 72-4 and CEA detected as many as 60% (p<0.05).
