입시문화와 청소년기: 사회문화적 관점에서 본 한국 청소년 또래관계에 대한 고찰 = College exam culture and adolescence: A study on Korean adolescent peer relations from a sociocultural perspective

This paper studies Korean adolescents, focusing on the impact of hyper-competitive education in an education-conscious society onto peer relations. We pay attention to how the pressures to excel academically in order to gain entrance to a prestigious university affect and construct peer relations. Our objective is to situate studies of adolescence within a specifically Korean socio-cultural context, to complement studies that have mechanically adopted Western categories to study Korean adolescents. For this study, we have approached the subjects with qualitative research methods, conducting in-depth interviews with 56 teenagers. Our findings show that peer relations are deeply influenced by social pressure to excel academically. Hyper-competitive education, in the form of schooling and extracurricular classes at private tutoring institutions, not only structure teenagers' everyday life and timetable, but also who they meet and what they do together in the little spare time they have. The role parents play in organizing their children's education also spills over to controlling peer relations, including those with the opposite sex. We argue that such findings can only be understood by taking into account the characteristics of Korean hyper-competitive education and the structural constraints of an education-conscious society, and point to the limits of imposing Western categories to this case.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 입시문화라는 사회문화적 조건에서 맺어지는 한국청소년들의 또래관계의 특수성에 주목한다. 기존의 청소년 연구는 성적과 학업을 또래관계나 이성교제, 놀이 등과 같은 청소년 행위차원의 항목으로 개별적이고도 독립적으로 분석해왔다. 본 연구에서는 남녀 중․고등학생 56명을 심층인터뷰 한 자료를 토대로 입시문화라는 총체적인 틀 속에서 또래관계를 분석하고자 한다. 조사결과에 따르면 청소년의 일상적 삶은 학교생활과 학원생활로 그 기본적인 틀이 구성되어 있으며, ‘노는’ 행위 역시 ‘공부’에 반대되는 행위로서 개념화되고 인식되며 실천된다. 한국 청소년들은 친구를 사귈 때 성격이 제일 중요하다고 하지만, 공부를 잘 하든 못 하든 모두 친구와의 성적 차이와 그 효과에 대해서 걱정하고 있었고, 성적과 관련해서 친구 사귀는 것에 대해서 부모의 간섭을 받으면서도 이를 당연하게 생각하고 있었다. 본 연구는 한국의 입시문화가 청소년의 삶과 관계를 구조화 시키고 있음을 보여주고, 부모의 학업관리와 친구관계에 대한 간섭 때문에 부모로부터 쉽게 독립하지 못하게 하는 결과를 낳는다고 결론을 내리고 있다.
