퀜틴 스키너의 홉스 자유론 연구 = Quentin Skinner on Hobbes’s Theory of Liberty

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 스키너의 홉스 자유론 해석을 비판적으로 고찰하는 데 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 세 가지 주제를 중심으로 논의를 전개하였다. 첫째, 스키너의 정치사상사 방법론인 맥락주의를 검토하고 이를 오스틴의 화행이론과 콜링우드의 재연적 역사 개념과의 연관 속에서 살펴보았다. 둘째, 홉스를 소극적 자유주의자로 규정해 온 기존 해석에 문제를 제기, 그의 사상 속에 공화주의적 자유 개념도 함께 포함되어 있다는 스키너의 주장에 대해 알아보았다. 셋째, 스키너의 홉스 해석을 둘러싸고 전개된 논쟁을 비판적으로 검토하였다. 이러한 검토를 통해 본 연구는 스키너의 홉스 재해석이 갖는 이론적 의의와 한계를 함께 조명하였다.

This study aims to critically examine Quentin Skinner’s interpretation of Hobbes’ theory of liberty. To this end, the discussion is structured around three main themes. Firstly, Skinner’s contextualism approach to the history of political thought is examined and categorised in relation to J.L.Austin’s theory of speech acts and R.G.Collingwood’s concept of re-enactment. Secondly, the study analyses Skinner’s assertion that Hobbes should not be considered a proponent of negative liberty, but rather a thinker whose ideas incorporate aspects of the republican conception of freedom. Thirdly, criticisms raised by Philip Pettit, a fellow neo-Roman republican theorist, against Skinner’s interpretation are reviewed and the key issues involved are discussed.
