    The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of prior-knowledge and screen split on task performance and cognitive load factor. College students(Male=27, Female=84) participated. Three different screen layouts were applied(one-column vs. two-column vs. three-column) to two different levels(high prior-knowledge group vs. low prior-knowledge group) of participants depending on their pre-test results. The dependant variables were learning achievement, five cognitive load factors, and time-on-task. The result revealed that there was a significant interaction effect on posttest score for learning achievement. Students under two- and three-column condition showed no difference between levels of prior-knowledge. However, there was significant difference between levels of prior-knowledge under one-column condition. Similarly, there was significant interaction effect on the DIF(perceived task difficulty). Also simple-main effect analysis showed that participants of low-prior knowledge group under three column condition significantly perceived task difficulty among the other conditions. For the time-on-task, interestingly, participant of high-prior knowledge group with three-column condition showed significantly longest task completion time. This result indicated that there possibly detrimental effect of three column condition for high prior-knowledge group.
