This study examines the teaching strategies used by mothers and teachers during cooperative tasks with children and the relationship of each to children`s private speech. Subjects were 15 mother-children dyads and 15 teacher-children dyads. Each dyad worked on two cooperative tasks. Each adult-child interaction during the tasks was analyzed in terms of the characteristics of the adult teaching strategies used and the child`s private speech. The results were as follows: First, the teachers used more teaching strategies than the mothers. Second, the teachers and the mothers used different strategies. The mothers used visual cues and physical affections frequently, whereas the teachers tended to use a questioning strategy. Third, the children engaged in private speech more frequently when they were with their mothers. Finally, there were relationships between the characteristics of adults` teaching strategies and those of children`s private speech.
