The pollens are important causative a gents in respiratory allergy because they are rich in protein and float in the air in great quantities. The effect of traditional remedy is transient and accompanies numerous side effects which limits long term use. As immunology advances, it become possible to hyposensitize or desensitize the allergy specifically, if the causative agent is known. So it is essential for diagnosis and treatment of pollen allergy to survey the airborne pollen in the area where the patients live. Also it helps choosing necessary pollen allergens which will be tested to individual patient living in a particular area. Durhams gravity pollen collector is a simple and effective device for investigation of airborne pollen. Collected pollens may be observed under the light microscope without any treatment. But it is usually necessary to remove cytoplasm and nucleus by Erdtmans acetolysis for detailed morphological observation. A Durhams pollen collector was intalled on the well-ventilated rooftop of Seoul National University Hospital. The airborne pollens were collected from March, 1982 to February, 1983. They were treated with modified Erdtmans acetolysis method and identified to Genus except for Graminaceae under the light microscope. To estimate hypersensitivity to pollen extracts, skin tests were performed to 1,255 patients with allergic rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma. The resuits of skin tests were compared with radioallergosorbent test (RAST) for clinical correl ation. Twenty four Genera and one Oder were identified in collected pollen. There were 13 Genera in tree, one Oder and one Genus in grass and 10 Genera in Weed. The airborne pollen was found from March 1, 1982 to December 17, 1983 and from February 15, 1983 to February 28, 1983. The maximum total count was 120 grains/cm 24hr on April 26, 1982. Among various meteological data, rainfall Influenced the pollen counts most severely. The Pollen seasons were divided into tree, grass and weed season but they were overlapped. The tree season was from middle of March to end of June. There were Alnus(alder), Corylus (hazel), Acer(maple), Pinus(pine), Ulmus(elm), Popolus(poplar), Salix (willow), Ginkgo(ginkgo), Quercus(oak), Carpinus(carpinus), Betular (birch), Morus(mulberry), and Junglans (walnut) in the tree season. The grass season ranged from end of March to end of October. There were Graminaceae(grass) and Cyperus(nutgrass) in the grass season. The weed season was from middle of June to end of November. There were plantago (plantain), Rumex (sorrel), Chenopodium-Amaranthus (goosefoot-pigweed), Trifolium(clover), Artemisia(mugwort), Sedum (sedum), Lespedeza(lespedeza), Ambrosia (ragweed), and P arnassia (parnassia) in the weed season. In the skin test, the extract of Chrysanthemum pollen produced positive reaction most frequently, recording 9.5%. The positive reaction to Pinus pollen extract was significantly lower in Seoul dwellers (6.1%) than other area (10.8%). This is considered to represent their environment. Agreement between the RAST and skin tests of Chrysanthemum, Artemisia and Ambrosia was 64,9%. The clinically significant response of skin test was +3 or more, It is concluded that the airborne pollen is rich in Seoul area and may serve as important causative allergens in respiratory allergy.
