The purpose of this study is to examine the locational behavior of relocating firms in the Capital Region of Korea between 1991 and 1996. With some manipulation, the Capital Region is assumed to be a monocentric area and conditional logit model is used as a basic estimation method. Regressions are performed for all the firms relocated within the Capital Region and for relocating firms from Seoul to Gyunggi Province to analyze the suburbanization phenomenon across broad industry categories and firm sizes. The findings of this study are summarized as follows. 1) As for the distance from CBD, most firms are reluctant to move out from Seoul. 2) Agglomeration economies play an important role on the relocation decision of firms. 3) The prices of production factors represented by regional wage and local tax also have a large effect on the choice of locations. 4) The effects of government plicy are somewhat ambiguous. For the total movers in the Capital Region, the policy is effective, causing more firms to move to Development Induction District. In the viewpoint of decentralization, however, the policy has no effect. 5) The directional pattern of relocating firms shows that firms prefer to relocate to areas in southern area of Han River. It is shown that these results vary across broad industry categories and firms sizes.
