한센인에 대한 사회적 거리감

국문 초록 (Abstract)

의학기술의 발달과 더불어 한센병 환자에 대한 치료와 주변에의 전염을 예방(차단)하는 것이 가능해졌음에도 불구하고, 한센병 환자에 대한 사회적 낙인과 차별 상황은 그리 향상되고 있지 않다. 따라서 한센인의 사회복귀나 사회통합을 높이기 위해서는 먼저 한센인에 대한 편견과 차별의 근본적인 기제를 밝히고, 다음으로 그를 해결하기 위한 대책방안을 제시하는 것이 필요하다. 이와 같은 문제의식에 의거하여, 본 연구는 전국의 일반인1,446명을 표본으로 채택하여, 사회적 거리감의 개념과 귀인이론을 사용하여 일반인의 한센인에 대한 인식 및 태도를 파악하기 위하여 위계적 회귀분석을 하였다. 분석 결과는 첫째, 한센병에 대한 부정적 고정관념보다 부정적 감정이 사회적 거리감에 더 큰 영향을 미치고 있었다. 둘째, 통제성, 안정성 모두 사회적 거리감에 영향을 미쳐 병에 대한 책임이 본인에게 있다고 생각할수록, 치료로 증상이 호전되거나 회복되기 어렵다고 생각할수록 사회적 거리감이 크게 나타났다. 이와 같은 연구결과를 바탕으로 일반인들의 긍정적인 태도 형성을 위하여 한센병에 대한 이해를 증진시키고 한센인에 대하여 보다 긍정적인 고정관념과 감정을 갖고 사회적 거리감을 줄여나갈 수 있는 대책방안이 제시되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Korean communities infringed human rights and inflicted discrimination against people affected by Hansen’s disease through social segregation driven by extreme prejudice and fear towards Hansen’s disease. Although there has been improvement in human rights infringement and discrimination over the years, many people affected by Hansen's disease still suffer social isolation due to the public’s prejudice and discrimination. It is very important to find out the attitude of public towards the people affected by Hansen's disease and the fundamental mechanism embedded in prejudice and discrimination. In this research, 1446 people have been surveyed nationally to analyse the attitudes towards the people affected by Hansen's disease using the social distance concept. The factors affecting the social distance were categorized into stereotype and emotional feeling and their respective influence was compared. Based on the attribution theory, this research analysis covered factors affecting discriminatory attitude and behavior such as the disease’s controllability and stability in addition to social demographical variables, contact and knowledge about Hansen’s disease. According to the analysis, firstly, the general public’s negative stereotype towards people affected by Hansen's disease is 2.53 out of 5, negative feelings 2.59 and social distance 3.04. Overall this was not that high. Secondly, social distance is more influenced by negative feelings than negative stereotype. Thirdy, controllability and stability all affected social distance. The social distance was increased as attributing self-responsible for contracting a disease, and increasing skepticism for recovery through treatment. Based on the research results, suggestions are made to improve the public’s attitudes and understanding towards Hansen’s disease as well as reducing social distance by having positive stereotypes and feelings.
