The purpose of this study is to develop a culturally localized Anxiety
Assessment Scale for Chinese college students, aiming to measure, in a more
scientific and systematic manner, their emotional experiences, cognitive
patterns, behavioral responses, and academic performance in anxiety -
provoking contexts. In contrast to existing instruments that are largely
grounded in Western cultural frameworks, this study seeks to fully
incorporate the psychological characteristics and sociocultural environment of
Chinese students during the scale construction process, thereby ensuring the
content’s applicability and cultural relevance. The ultimate goal is to provide
standardized criteria for mental health screening, early warning, and
intervention among Chinese college students, as well as to furnish reliable
tools for subsequent empirical research in psychology.
In terms of research design, this study follows the fundamental
procedures of psychometrics, advancing through a combination of qualitative
and quantitative approaches. First, qualitative data were collected via in -
depth interviews and surveys, systematica lly identifying students’ anxiety
experiences in relation to academic pressure, interpersonal relationships, life
adaptation, and career planning, from which an initial item pool was generated.
Second, the Delphi method was employed to invite multiple expe rts in
psychology and education to conduct iterative rounds of consultation and
revision, ensuring both scientific rigor and contextual appropriateness. During
the quantitative validation phase, two rounds of large - scale surveys were
conducted. Item analysis and exploration factor analysis (EFA) were
performed using SPSS 27.0, followed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA)
with Amos 29.0 to examine model fit. Multiple methods were used to assess
the reliability and validity of the scale. After several iterations of refinement
and selection, a formal version of the scale was finalized with 32 items across
five dimensions: emotional experience, behavioral response, cognitive pattern,
somatic symptoms, and academic performance, thereby establishing a
systematic framework for anxiety assessment.
Compared with internationally established anxiety assessment
instruments, the Chinese College Students Anxiety Assessment Scale
demonstrates distinctive advantages. In terms of cultural relevance, the
design was grounded in students lived experiences and sociocultural contexts,
with items reflecting uniquely Chinese factors such as family expectations,
peer comparison, and employment pressure. This ensures a closer alignment
with students’ actual psychological states. In terms of dimensional coverage,
the s cale not only includes universal features such as emotional experience
and somatic symptoms but also incorporates the dimension of “academic
performance,” highlighting the critical role of scholastic pressure in students’
anxiety, thereby addressing gaps i n traditional instruments. Regarding item
content, the research team integrated contemporary concerns of Chinese
students, including examinations, career choices, and online social
interactions, making the scale both timely and targeted. In terms of
measurement effectiveness, while the scale demonstrates strong correlations
with international benchmarks, it shows clearer discriminative capacity in
identifying academic anxiety, thereby proving more applicable in educational
settings and intervention practices.
The significance of this study lies in providing a culturally adapted tool
for assessing anxiety among Chinese college students, thereby contributing
to mental health education and intervention practices. The scale enables
educators and counselors to identify high - risk students at an early stage,
offering scientific support for prevention and intervention, while also helping
students better understand and regulate their own anxiety states. This, in turn,
fosters psychological resilience and personal growth. From an academic
perspective, the study enriches the system of indigenous psychometric
instruments in China and advances anxiety research in cross - cultural
contexts. Through the application and dissemination of this scale, school -
based mental health services can become more scientifically robust, ultimately
promoting the psychological well - being, academic success, and social
adaptability of Chinese colege students.
