The purpose of this study was to identify the care needs of the elderly with dementia and to examine the burden of primary family caregiver. Fifty four primary family caregivers were interviewed using a questionnaire. The major problems identified by family caregivers in caring for the elderly with dementia were forgetfulness, repetition of the same question, discontentment, using foul language, and aggressive behavior. The caregiver reported care needs including bathing, washing face, combing hair, and choosing proper clothing. There were problems in toileting with urine and bowel incontinence. The family caregiver expressed a relatively high burden score of 3.66 out of a possible score of 5. Their feelings of burden included mental anguish, chronic fatigue, depression, and strain. Although the health problems of family caregivers showed a lower score(2.95) than average, they reported more mental health problems than physical health problem. The correlation between the level of burden and health status was significant in bivariate analysis (r=.3765, p<.01). This study indicates a need for nurses and health providers to approach these caregivers with a plan to give consideration to interventions directed at improving caring skills.
