The purpose of this study is to make clear about the South Korean''s Social Support for the North Koreans, who live in South Korea. The Social Support is known as good resource for North Koreans to adapt in South Korean.
This study is checking how ''We-ness'' is formed. The result is that ''We-ness'' is formed when similarity is perceived within each other. As it was predicted, the more South Koreans perceive North Koreans similar, the higher the ''We-ness'' level.
First hypothesis was about the amount of Social Support given according to the level of ''We-ness'' perceived. The result is that total amount of Social Support is influenced by the level of perceived We-ness'' . The more one perceive them as ''We'', the more one gives social support. South Koreans, who regard North Korean refugees as ''We'', intend to support them much more compared to the group who regards them as ''Them(lower level of ''We'')''.
The Second assumption was about how the South Korean''s perceive North Koreans. The group, that forces relatively high pressure to assimilation, has intention to give ''Informational Support''. This may mean that South Koreans think information is necessary for North Koreans to become assimilated. In contrast, the group, that possess high level of heterogeneity acceptance, had intention to give ''Emotional and Material Support''.
Finally, the data appeared to show differences in the types of perceptions( Assimilation-oriented, Acceptance-oriented, Integration-oriented and Unconcern), South Koreans have toward North Koreans, according to two different dimensions; Assimilation pressure and Heterogeneity acceptance. ''Acceptance-oriented'' group, who treat North Koreans as partners to coexist with, gives an ''Emotional Support''. This infers that they may consider perceived differences between each other as the object for harmony or coexistence, not for assimilation. ''Assimilation-oriented'' people give ''Estimate Support'' and ''Integration-oriented'' people intend to support by giving information. ''Unconcern'' perception group''s Social Support is lower than any other groups.
In short, Accepting North Koreans who live in South Korea as ''We'' seems to be the first step in discussing Social Support. And Social Support differed according to the perceptions South Koreans had toward North Koreans.
